The Song Tree

Soundtrack of The Song Tree.

My mother worked and my grandmother often put me to sleep. But my mother would sing this song to me when she came home,
even if I was asleep.

My grandad would always sing this song. It brings back fond memories of staying with my grandparents. It makes me cry to this day.

It is a song from my childhood that I loved, I have sung it to my children and grandchildren so they all sing it too. I am happy I thought of it.

The Song Tree project brought together Australian women from diverse ethnic backgrounds to share songs and culture through communal stitching and conversation. The work celebrates Australia’s rich cultural diversity and explores the common threads shared by all women in a time of often-divisive public commentary.

The large tree-like installation of embroidered leaves accompanied by a soundtrack of participants singing was exhibited at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre September/October 2019 and at Gallery 76, the Embroiderers Guild of NSW over December/January 2020.
